The Pre-Production Checklist That Saves Brand Films From Mediocrity

Ninety percent of a brand film's quality is decided before the camera rolls. Here's the pre-production system — message hierarchy, shot economy, and approval design.

Every disappointing brand film I've been asked to rescue had the same root cause: the hard decisions were postponed until the edit. Pre-production is where films are actually made.

This is the checklist my team runs before a single location is locked, and it consistently produces films that survive both the client review and the market.

Table of contents
  1. 011. Write the one sentence first
  2. 022. Build a message hierarchy, not a message list
  3. 033. Shot economy
  4. 044. Design the approval process before you shoot
  5. 055. Plan the cutdowns during the shoot
  6. 066. Sound is half the film, budget it that way

01

1. Write the one sentence first

Before mood boards, before references, write the single sentence the viewer should be able to say after watching. If the team can't agree on that sentence, the film has no spine and every subsequent decision becomes a matter of taste.

Print it and put it on the call sheet.

02

2. Build a message hierarchy, not a message list

Clients arrive with eleven things to communicate. Rank them one to eleven, then commit publicly to covering only the top three.

Everything below rank three becomes supporting b-roll or a cutdown. A film that says three things clearly beats one that mentions eleven.

03

3. Shot economy

Count the shots you need to tell the story, then cut 20%. Constraint forces stronger compositions and gives you time on the day to actually get them right.

The best-looking films are almost never the ones with the longest shot lists — they're the ones where each setup got proper attention.

04

4. Design the approval process before you shoot

Decide now who gives notes, at which two stages, and in what format. Consolidated notes from one named owner at rough-cut and fine-cut only.

Unmanaged approval is the single largest destroyer of creative quality and schedule, and it is entirely preventable with one paragraph in the pre-production document.

05

5. Plan the cutdowns during the shoot

You will need vertical, 15-second and 6-second versions. Frame with safe zones, capture alternate takes with tighter energy, and record extra clean plates for text.

Retrofitting a 16:9 hero film into vertical always looks retrofitted; planning it costs almost nothing.

06

6. Sound is half the film, budget it that way

Allocate real budget to score, sound design and mix. Audiences forgive imperfect visuals far more readily than muddy sound, and a well-designed mix makes modest footage feel expensive.

If money is tight, cut a shooting day before you cut the sound budget.

In closing

Pre-production is where you buy quality cheaply. Decide the sentence, rank the message, constrain the shot list, control approvals and protect sound.

Do that and the edit becomes assembly rather than rescue.

Founders, marketers and creative leads who want a practical, no-fluff playbook on brand film. If you own a growth or brand outcome and need something you can act on this week, you're in the right place.

How long does it take to see results?+

Most teams start seeing early signal within 2–4 weeks of applying the ideas here. Compounding results — the kind that change your unit economics — usually show up between weeks 8 and 12 once the loops are running consistently.

Do I need a big budget to implement this?+

No. Everything in this article is designed to work with the resources you already have. Bigger budgets can accelerate outcomes, but the frameworks themselves compound on discipline, not spend.

Where should I start if I only have one hour?+

Read the Key Takeaways at the bottom, pick the single item that maps to your biggest bottleneck this quarter, and ship one small change before the end of the day. Momentum beats perfection.
